Activities for the cold days: Zurich in winter

When the temperatures drop, things get cosy in the Limmat city. Inviting cafés and restaurants, a variety of exciting museums, a spa day or a relaxing walk with a view on the snow-covered Alps, Zurich has a lot to offer in the winter months.

Try a fondue party for the ultimate ski holiday feeling in the middle of Zurich. The Swiss classic can be enjoyed in a variety of places in the city during winter season. In an open-air restaurant, on a boat, in the tram or in one of the many temporary fondue chalets, for instance. Our tip for fondue enjoyment at home: Züri Fondue is a blend of cheeses made from local ingredients, available at Globus.

Ice skating on the Zürichberg

Ice skating is a popular leisure activity for Zurich residents in winter. Young and old do their laps on the seasonal square of the Christmas Village or on the Heuried and Dolder artificial ice rinks. The latter is clearly the most impressive ice rink in Zurich: situated high above the city, it was built in the 1930s. In addition to ice skating, it also provides the infrastructure for curling and ice hockey.

Relaxation in the Limmat city

Cold winter days are perfect for unwinding in one of Zurich's spa locations. The Stadtbad Zürich invites you to a unique hammam ritual in the basement of the Volkshaus. In the Hürlimannbad & Spa bathers enjoy an impressive view over the city. Brave swimmers can jump into the cold lake at the Sauna am See after their sauna session.

A day in Zurich’s museums

The variety of museums in Zurich makes a grey winter day colourful again in no time. Whether art, architecture, natural science, or technology, the city of Zurich offers the right museum for all interests. And for families with children, a large selection of family-friendly exhibitions is available throughout the city.

Our tip: reach one of the many ski resorts near Zurich that are easily accessible by public transport, and spend an exciting day in the snow.
